mount reiserfs

Well... I was gettin crazy with this so I decided to share the knowledge.
I decided to add two new SATA hard drive to my friend's pc and configure a raid system.
After creating the RAID via YaST I cant mount that via fstab to allow normal users read and write on that.
Well, I was searchin a solution about options to add in fstab but that wasn't the right way. To do that just change permissions on the mounted drive and reiserfs will remeber that... EASY AS FUCK!

summary:
in /etc/fstab --->
/dev/md0 /media/300gb reiserfs auto,users,user_xattr,exec 1 2
<---

777 permissions on mounted /media/300gb

restore kmail mails

In suse the kmail folder is situated in /home/user/.kde/share/apps/kmail.

If you have reinstalled your system and opening kmail and clikkin on mails they magically disappears ... well I think it is a kmail bug!!!
Anyway just stop clikkin on mails, close kmail, go in emails folder (the folder above) and delete all indexes (*index*)

FreeNX on SuSE 10.0 and 9.3

Well... FreeNX is the best remote controlling system now on earth and pretty easy to install on our Suse distro.

Just open YaST and search for freenx and select all related packets.

Do you think it's enoght? the answer that you are waitin for it's NO :D

I put here a link of a well done tutorial on MadPenguin.org ( cause, you know, I'm lazy :P )

And for you that dont understand why you cant still connect after this tutorial, here is the troubleshoot:

Error message Server not installed or NX access disabled

If you see the following error message it means that the nx user's public key was not accepted.:

NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 6721
NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command
NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
NX> 200 Connected to address: 192.168.2.21 on port: 22
NX> 202 Authenticating user: nx
NX> 208 Using auth method: publickey
NX> 204 Authentication failed.
This can be caused by a couple of things.

the nx user's authorized key file /var/lib/nxserver/home/.ssh/authorized_keys2 is incorectly named. All versions of ssh that I have seen on Ubuntu, Fedora, Redhat/Centos and OFCOURSE suse are configured to look for an authoized key file names .ssh/authorized_keys not .ssh/authorized_keys2. You can rename the authorized_keys file but it might be better to reconfigure sshd_config because the nxserver --stop command renames the .ssh/authorized_keys2 to .ssh/authorized_keys2.disabled to prevent access via an nxclient
sshd is not running or is incorrectly configured. At minimum you need PubkeyAuthentication yes in the sshd_config file
The server and client public keys might be different. At install the server and client use a default key which should be changed. You can open /var/lib/nxserver/home/.ssh/authorized_keys and compare its contents to the key stored in the client by:
Open the client tool
Click the Configure button
Click the Key button on the General Tab
Ensure that the key matches the key found in /var/lib/nxserver/home/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server

CUPS and HOTPLUG

This is a really short HOWTO to configure hotplug to auto-enable usb printer on pluggin in :)

1) lsusb -v show, if printer is plugged in, his ID and VENDOR.

2) create file printer.usermap in /etc/hotplug/usb/
Here we will paste this :

printer 0x0003 0x[yourprinterid] 0x[yourprintervendorid] 0x0000 0x0000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00000000

3) create file printer in /etc/hotplug/usb/
Here create the script like this example that enable and accept jobs for a printer:

if [ "${ACTION}" = "add" ]

lpadmin -p printername -E
fi

4) dont forget to chmod the file to make it executable :)

Maybe nobody need these informations if not interested in webserver management :)

Virtual nameservers:
I'm pointing my nameservers to the IPs of my webhost's nameservers. So it sounds like 'virtual' is the correct term. Using your example,
ns1.mydomain.com => IP of dnsmyhoster.com's DNS server #1
ns2.mydoman.com => IP of dnsmyhoster.com's DNS server #2

Step 1. Create the nameservers at the registrar (contact your registrar if you dont have direct access).
NS1.mydomain.com => IP#1
NS2.mydomain.com => IP#2

Step 2. Create the nameservers at the host.
It currently looks like this:
example.com. => ns1.dnsmadeeasy.com. (type: NS)
example.com. => ns2.dnsmadeeasy.com. (type: NS)
Should be changed like this:
example.com. => ns1.example.com. (type: NS)
example.com. => ns2.example.com. (type: NS)

Step 3. Add A records on the authoritative DNS servers at the host.
This looks easy enough.
ns1.example.com. => IP#1 (type: A record)
ns2.example.com. => IP#2 (type: A record)

d-link dns bugs on DSL-G604T and similar SHIT

Well, this is the second bug (the first was ipv6) I've found on this stupid router (like all d-link stuff) that made me crazy...

Some applications are unable to resolve domains (such as wget, lynx and whois in my case) and I didn't knew why until I changed the default nameserver (the router address from dhcp) on /etc/resolv.config to the ones gave from my ISP: ALL MAGICALLY WORKS NOW (FUCK!!!)

If you don't like dhcpcd to change your nameserver settings then either set DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF=no in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp, or set MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF_DYNAMICALLY=no in /etc/sysconfig/network/config or (manually) use dhcpcd with -R. If you only want to keep your searchlist, set DHCLIENT_KEEP_SEARCHLIST=yes in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp or (manually) use the -K option.

It is sooo strange but this Logitech optical doesnt work on OpenSuse 10.0 and you have to act a trick. I hate this cause people get far from linux when they get problems like this =( and I HATE this... wanna see linux on every machine I sell and I hope this for the future.
Anyway this is the trick:

open Yast -> System -> bootloader configuration
modify the boot option and add psmouse.proto=imps to Other Kernel Parameters
reboot

and that's it!

ipv6 problems AGAIN

AGAIN since 9.1 version, ipv6 still break your internet connection, delaying DNS answere and giving the TIMEOUT ERROR!

To disable this annoying thing, just edit /etc/modules.conf, go to the line containing "net-pf-10 ipv6" and change to "net-pf-10 off".
Restart your machine and the world will smile again!

NTFS HowTO

Sometimes, in this world, it happen that you need to read from an NTFS partition with your fantastic SuSE 9.3 and you think it's easy to configure it with YaST -> patition ... and ... you find a bad surprise: IT DOESN'T WORK !!!!
Don't disperate babe, you always have the command line ;) and my instructions!!!

Open a shell and insert following commands:

mkdir /wherever/ntfs
chown root:users /wherever/ntfs
vim /etc/fstab

To the last line insert:

/dev/hda1 /wherever/ntfs ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0

where "/dev/hda1" could be different according to your ntfs partition. Ex. "/dev/sda1" for USB disks.

If yours it's an external HD write this:

/dev/sdb1 /wherever/ntfs subfs ro,users,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0

where "/dev/sdb1" could be different on your system and uid/gid too. To verify uid/gid just type "id" in a shell and find your user.

That's all folks!! Now you can mount your partition using "mount /dev/hda1"!!

Have you got any problem wit /media directory? cannot automatically mount cd or usb drives? well, your solution is in fstab ( /etc/fstab ).
Check if in fstab that media directory is mounted Read-Only ( ro ). If so, edit it and change ro with rw ( read-write ). Well, now you can umount /media/ and mount it again ( mount /media/ )!!

Powersaved and CPU frequency

Sometimes, powersaved daemon, cannot recognize cpu correctly and load the necessary cpufreq module. To force loading of module concerning your CPU, modify /etc/sysconfig/powersave/cpufreq file adding the module to the voice POWERSAVE_CPUFREQD_MODULE="".

Name Resolution Does Not Work with Several Concurrent DHCP Clients

Apache2 and Virtual Hosts (VHost)

In this article, i'll explain you how to set your Apache configuration on SuSE 9.2 to make your local websites visible on you machine. This is particularly useful for people like me who make websites and need to test them on their local machines before publish.

First of all, you need Apache installed on you machine via YaST with eventually PHP and MySql.
After that you'll have all apache configuration files under /etc/apache2 directory.
Well DONT TOUCH ANY FILE THERE!
The simplest thing you have to do is create a mysites.conf file wherever you want and hardlink it to /etc/apache2/vhosts.d
I created mysites.conf in my public_html for my personal comfort :)

What about mysites.conf content? HERE to you a simple example:

<virtualhost>
ServerName localhost
ServerAlias linzekus
DocumentRoot /srv/www/htdocs
</virtualhost>

backup mysql tables and restore

it's easy to backup all you mysql tables: just go to /var/lib/mysql (on SuSE linux distro) and copy all folders, that's it.
If you record this forlders on a cd or dvd as backup and you lost all privilege settings, this is what you have to do after you copy back your backup on mysql folder:

chmod -R 766 *
chmod -R 700 mysql/

and all will work fine again!

go backup guys! ;)

Apache2 settings

after installing all needed rpms about apache2 and php4, just open /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and add following two lines on bottom to make UserDir and Alias work:
Include /etc/apache2/mod_userdir.conf
Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/*
UserDir permit you to use /home//public_html directory as server directories and make users publish their own files.
Alias permit to use any directory on you server for publish contents.

strange SU wrong password

Haven't told you that I've installed the brand-new SuSE 9.2 on my laptop and It works great only if I use KDE. In fact I tried Gnome 2.6 and was so unhappy to see that it doesn't work good... Gnome it's hard to configure if u are a maniac of personalization. Let me know if your experience wit gnome have been better than mine!

But, let's talk about the title's argument. It was so strange but, after a long "play" with yast and user configuration, I wasn't able to "su" or "sudo" from console. Still dont know what happened but that executables lost the suid privileges. What I've done, to make all things work again, was:

chown 4755 /bin/su /usr/bin/sudo

change file permissions

Again a simple command to simplefy our life on linux/unix machines :D

As you know I am a webmaster and usually I need to upload files on webservers that manage permissions in different ways from me on my machine and I have to chmod a large amount fo files. Using following command I can make this work in seconds :D

find . -type d -name public_html -exec chmod 0755 {} \;

It searches (using find recursively (ie it checks folders and sub folders/directories and sub directories) for a directory (-type d) called (-name) public_html and when it does it runs the command (-exec) chmod 0755 (which sets the permissions so that the owner can read, write and execute/open the folder and all other users can read and execute/open the folder).

Feel free to experiment and change this command on your machine

Today I got a funny problem: I create a new link on Desktop of my Home folder.
My Surprise was that his name was "TRASH FOLDER".
So I thought "WHAT's UP?? Who gave this name to my home folder??". The first Thing I've done ( as ex-Winzozz User ) was right-click on folder to access properties and change the name there, but .... the name didn't change.
Well I demistyfied that, to change the name of folders, there is an hidden file inside every folder-link on desktop called ".directory". Here you can change some property, included the name "TRASH FOLDER".

MYSQL wont startup

Today, mysql wont startup and dont know why (or maybe!)
First of all I looked at "/var/lib/mysql/<\your host name\>.err" log and this was the error:

Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Can't find file: 'host.MYI' (errno: 2)

The problem is the file was there (/var/lib/mysql/mysql).
The solution is delete /var/lib/mysql/mysql wit command rm -fR,
type rcmysql start and the folder will be recreated.
You'll lost all users but mysql will be up and running! Now you have to reset the root password: mysqladmin -u root password

hope to have been useful again!

P.S.
I forgot... the error was my fault ... I played too much with phpmyadmin.
Machines do always what we want they do!

Multiple rename with find command!

I've done this shell script for multiple rename files not in same folder
(for doin that, simply use rename command) using the combination between mv and find in this way:

for i in $(find / -name *.ext1);
do mv $i $(echo $i | cut -f1 -d.).ext2;
done

in the specific, this change an extension of a file (ext1) in one another (ext2).
feel free to modify it to match your needs.

bluetooth and SuSE 9.1

It costed to me a lot of work, but finally I got IT!
My bluetooth phone work and I can browse it.

First of all, connect your bluetooth.usb.key directly on usb port without using hubs or will not work (dont know why but I'll solve it in future).

UPDATE the deafault kdebluetooth installed with your suse wit this one kdebluetooth
because it lacks a lot of necessary files you need for make it work.

After that, start kbluetoothd and you'll have an icon in system proces pannel click on it and it will show u the services disposable on your phone. that's all (well ... there are a lot of things to learn so read here: kde-bluetooth.sourceforge.net)!

Tips Installing software on SuSE 9.1

To install RPM files with Yast from command line, type this : yast -i <\packagetoinstall\>.rpm

If you downloaded source code from a program (tar.gz files) you can quickly make an RPM file from it.
To do this, first of all install the package "checkinstall", then unpack your source package and cd to the directory where you unpacked the tar.gz file.
Run the following commands:

./configure
make
checkinstall #instead of make install

When finished, you'll find your RPM in /usr/src/packages/RPMS/i686

Now you can install it where you want with yast - i <\packagetoinstall\>.rpm or with rpm -i <\packagetoinstall\>.rpm. This allows your to easily uninstall it afterwards.

Asus L3500 Power Management on SuSE 9.1

Today, I discovered that power management on my asus doesn't function properly and that I can configure extra buttons and leds on my laptop trought powersave (default acpi manager for suse).
Now I'll show you how-to do it!

SUSPEND AND STANDBY

edit '/etc/powersave.conf'. Right at the end there are two lines:
POWERSAVED_DISABLE_USER_SUSPEND=yes POWERSAVED_DISABLE_USER_STANDBY=yes
modify it to 'no'

ASUS_ACPI

acpi4asus (kernel module for asus special keys and leds) is included in the kernel (from 2.6). Just load the module 'asus_acpi' since startup, editing the file '/etc/sysconfig/powersave/common'.

Search for the definition of 'POWERSAVE_ACPI_MODULES' and add 'asus_acpi'.
Same goes for 'POWERSAVE_ACPI_MODULES_NOT_TO_UNLOAD'.

Set POWERSAVE_CPUFREQD_MODULE="p4-clockmod" (doesnt work well: cpu boot at 300Mhz instead of 2.400Mhz even I've set powersave as well! tryin to find help and further informations)

mozilla and firefox run better

Take Note: These tips are for SUSE 9.1 with the 2.6 kernel:

Mozilla and FireFox both seem to run a little slow on Suse 9.1 cause "ipv6". What is "ipv6"...sheee...I haven't a clue...but there is a fix...and after I applied it...both Mozilla 1.7 rc1 and FireFox opened and went to the different websites fast. Before the fix...both browsers would often just sit and spin their little icons...and never reach the sites before they timed out.

Fix One: Go to >> /etc/modprobe.conf, right below this line:
alias net-pf-10 ipv6
add the following line:
install ipv6 /bin/true
Found this fix on Yahoo SCOX Message Board and credit for fix goes to w4rmc47, who posts on yahoo finance scox message board.

First of all, if you installed the SuSE personal like me, you should change the source installation!

Do this :

open YaST
from left pannel choose "software" and from right choose "change installation source"
click "add" button and choose ftp or http and fill the form using a SuSE mirror
then disable the cd source and enable the source just added (dont enable more than one source or YaST will freeze when you will add packet choosin "install/uninstall packets")

Now we can install Gaim with his dependancies.
For installing using an rpm go to guru.linuxbe.org, download gaim and install it wit YaST!

EASY SuSE!! I love it.

I'm still curious about what happened to my SuSE and still angry about that!
Now I'm a little bit scared cause I think that if this happen when I'll have data on disk, I'll be lost! But let think over.... =D

I reinstalled also mozilla but, this time, I choosed the version without the installer and it worked on the first start... I HIGHLY reccomend it.
These are the operation I've done to install firefox via terminal:

download from site ( obvious! =D)
mkdir /opt/mozilla
mv /home/-user-/Desktop/firefox*.tar.gz /opt/mozilla/
ungzip firefox*.tar.gz
tar -xvf firefox*.tar
ln -s /opt/mozilla/firefox/firefox /home/-user-/Desktop/firefox

then you can apply the icon in kde!

SUSE crash

I'm so disperate... my linux SuSE, after a boot this afternoon, crashed...

It mounted filesystem in readonly mode and I dont know why, cause I havent made changes on system.
The only solution I found after hours searchin on google and groups is : REINSTALL.
i'm so ... sad and angry

installing firefox 0.9.3 on suse

First of all I need my dear web browser mozilla Firefox so I download the official version from mozilla project and the language pack from italian mozilla project.
After downloading I switch to root, decompress the file in /opt/firefox/ and doublecliccked on installer.
OK all seam allright... now I have to click on firefox and ... It doesn't work! SIGH!! ='[
well ... I can do it! I launch firefox from shell so I can see messages and resolve the problem:

Xlib:connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib:XDM authorization key matches an existing client!
(firefox-bin:13607):Gtk-WARNING ** cannot open display

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
what should I do now?
let's do a google search and... bingo! here the solution!
I switch back to user and open a shell where I write:

su -m
password:
xhost + (switch off X authorization)
/opt/firefox/firefox-installer/firefox
et voilà! les jeux sont fait! (dont write this line on shell =D)
xhost - (switch on X authorization)

next operations: language pack and flash player!

hello, yesterday I putted on my ASUS L3500 laptop the last linux SUSE 9.1 and it was great and easy. Since now I think this is the best linux version for beginners (and I am a beginner, ofcourse =D).
For long time I wanted to do this change but I was full of job and I couldnt but, at least, here I am!

I'm on my linux desktop now and I'm starting to install all application I need for work and live better on my pc.

Ok, this is my first message... I'm so excited to take part of this world!
The scope of this Blog is collect in one place all my experiences wit web programming and linux.
In summary, this is a sort of troubleshooting!

If u want u can take my experiences and use it to resolve your own problems relatives to web and linux (cannot resolve your personal problem wit life yet :D).
